Stephen King Puts a New Villain Behind the Steering Wheel of a Mercedes SL500
Giancarlo Perlas May 29, 2014A new Stephen King villain will hit bookstores in June. The title of the book is Mr. Mercedes, which is also the moniker of the novel’s antagonist. The alias of the character is derived from the car he uses in his killing spree, the Mercedes SL500.
King is an author known for his compelling horror novels like the 1974 best-selling book Carrie. The book was later turned into a box-office hit when it arrived at the big screen in 1976 and was remade in 2013.
Aside from Carrie, the award-winning writer produced other titles under the horror and suspense genre, which he became known for. However, over the years, he explored other genres as well that focus on fantasy and science fiction. Now, for the first time in his career, he will be embarking on another genre that concentrates on the hard-boiled detective category. Mr. Mercedes marks King’s entry into the said niche.
The Plot
According to L.A. Times, the events of the story take place in an unnamed Midwestern city at its City Center, wherein hundreds of unemployed people are lining up during a foggy night for the following day’s job fair with the promise that it has “1,000 Jobs Guaranteed”.
At dawn, a gray Mercedes SL500 immediately emerged out of the thick fog, which plows its way to the gathered masses. The car, with its roaring V12 engine and all, kills eight people and injures a dozen more.
The incident prompts a retired cop name Bill Hodges to take up measures to stop the madman before the antagonist fulfills his other more diabolical plans.
The book appears to be another detective story that mimics a cat and mouse chase, but it promises to bring about a roller-coaster ride experience to its readers. Considering that it’s from King, it is probably worth checking out.
Visit your nearest bookstore on June 3 to be the first to read the novel before spoilers start spilling out over the Internet.
