Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC 6.0 AMG Wide Body Still Costs $150,000

One 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC 6.0 AMG Wide Body will be put on sale by RM Auctions Sotherby’s in Arizona on January 28 this year. With the chassis number WDB1260451A436448 and engine number 382 60 28, the car is expected to fetch around $100,000 to $150,000.
So what makes the forerunner of the Mercedes-AMG GT S more expensive than the latest pure AMG sports car of the three-pointed star brand?
First, only 50 units of the 560 SEC 6.0 AMG Wide Body were ever built. The last two digits of the car’s engine number, which is mentioned above, indicates that it is the 28th unit of the lineup to be produced.
Second, the car is one of the models tuned by AMG when it did not merge with Mercedes yet. It would not be until 1993 when the first car made under the banner of Mercedes-AMG would be built. That’s the Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG.
Aside from the history of the car, it possesses a pretty decent engine. Within its hood is a 6.0-liter DOHC 32-valve V8 power unit. It has a multi-point fuel injection mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.
According to RM Auctions, the original cost of the Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC 6.0 AMG Wide Body is around $200,000 including the price of the upgrades of AMG in the chassis, suspension and others.
The source also mentioned that the initial plan of AMG was to produce 100 units of the car. However, experts say that only 50 of it were made. Many of them ended up in the garage of collectors and automotive museums.
The 560 SEC 6.0 AMG Wide Body for sale here only has 56,000 miles in its clock as it’s one of the vehicles that were sold to collectors.
Update
According to Al Lydon, an AMG enthusiast and an owner of a classic 1984 W126 500SEL 5.4L AMG, the interpretation about the engine number provided by RM Auctions is incorrect.
Lydon explained the first three digits, the 382 represents the sequential quad cam serial number. AMG started with the number 200, so that makes the car featured here the 182nd quad cam engine (covering 5.0, 5.4, 5.6 and 6.0 displacements).
The next pair of number indicates the displacement of the engine, which is 6.0-liter.
Lastly, the number 28 does not represent the 28th widebody made. Instead, it represents the AMG engine technician’s name on a plate placed on every AMG engine made—One Man, One Engine. It is a practice carried on up to this day.
