Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda Once Owned by Stirling Moss Heads to Auction

Sir Stirling Moss is regarded as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers in history to have never won a world championship in the sport, however, he was able to win the historic Mille Miglia in 1955. Although he passed on at the age of 90 in 2020, his legacy lives on in the racing world and the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda that he once owned.
The 230 SL, also known as the “Moss Pagoda”, was built in 1966 specially for the legendary racer. According to the car’s colorful story, Moss originally wanted the 250 SL at that time but supply chain issues forced him and Mercedes to settle for a 230 SL instead. The UK-spec car was then customized in accordance with the requirements of Moss to include a 2.5-liter M129 engine sourced from the 250 SL.
The car was also personalized with a distinct opening on its roof at the request of Moss. In addition, it received flaps and hinges inspired by the iconic 300 SL Gullwing.
The custom Pagoda was sold by Moss in 1968 with around 11,000 miles on its clock. The car was repainted in Jaguar Pearl Gray back in 1970, and from then on, it remained intact up to this day.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Moss Pagoda will hit the auction block on August 28 at the Silverston’s Classic Sale. The seller is expecting to seal the deal with the classic car between $119,000 and $143,000.
