All-Electric Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV Coming in 2022

Giancarlo Perlas October 13, 2020

An all-new electric sport utility vehicle is coming from the EQ range of Mercedes-Benz. The three-pointed star marque just revealed the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV its new teaser video.

The EQS SUV together with its upcoming sedan counterpart and the EQE was recently officially revealed in its camouflaged form by Christoph Starzynski, Head of Product Group Electric Vehicle Architecture at Mercedes. According to him, the all-electric SUV is arriving in 2022, so it will likely bear a 2023 model year upon introduction.

Taking the design cues of its sedan version, the EQS SUV also features thin headlamps with circular taillights. Due to the heavy camouflage of the prototype, it is still hard to make out its other key exterior elements. However, it appears to have a strong resemblance in terms of shape with the current Mercedes-Benz GLS. With that, the dimensions of the EQS SUV will likely be similar to its fuel-guzzling sibling.

Despite being the counterpart of the GLS SUV, the EQS SUV will ride on Mercedes’ dedicated EV platform called EVA (Electric Vehicle Architecture). The platform is expected to support up to 700 km of electric range in a single charge based on the WLTP cycle.

The new EQS, EQE, and EQS SUV are among the 10 all-new Mercedes EVs planned going to 2022 as revealed by former Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche in 2017. The other units under the electrification efforts of the brand include the EQA, EQB, eVito, eSprinter, and the G-Class. The AMG and Maybach sub-brands were confirmed to embrace electric powertrains too.
