2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 Compact SUV Unveiled
Giancarlo Perlas February 26, 2020After the unveiling of the new Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 and the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35, the three-pointed star marque continues to impress us with the launch of the new Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 ahead of its scheduled public debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. The new high-performance GLA compact sport utility vehicle model is currently the most powerful trim in its range.
Appearance
The 2021 AMG GLA 45 is based on the standard Mercedes-Benz GLA and it combines the styling elements of the Mercedes-AMG A 45 hatch, except that since it’s an SUV, it has more ground clearance. The vehicle carries the signature Panamericana grille of Mercedes’ performance arm, and then it is equipped with new bumpers, sports wheels, gloss black accents and AMG badges.
Cabin
The interior is highlighted by sports seats wrapped in black MB-Tex and Dinamica leather with contrasting red stitching, red seatbelts, and carbon-fiber trim. These can be upgraded with the AMG Performance Package that gives sportier seats, MB-Tex Neva Grey and Black upholstery, and aluminum accents plus additional options for leather materials.
Like the AMG A 45 hatch, the cockpit of the SUV showcases a multi-function steering wheel, turbine-inspired air vents, twin digital displays, and aluminum highlights. The infotainment system is managed via the MBUX software that can recognize even voice commands and gesture controls.
Power
Beneath the hood of the AMG GLA 45 lies a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. The unit produces 382 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. The power is distributed via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to Mercedes’ 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. The configuration of the vehicle allows it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds while its top speed is electronically maxed at 155 mph.
The AMG GLA 45 is arriving in dealerships at the end of 2020. A more powerful variant of the GLA in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 S is expected to come next, which is estimated to offer around 415 hp and 369 lb-ft.
