Can We Finally See The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series?
Giancarlo Perlas August 13, 2019The Mercedes-AMG GT R is currently in showrooms, so making a more powerful Black Series might not be a priority for the German company. And yet, Mercedes can slot the Black Series either between the GT S and the GT R or introduce it as a top-range model.
Although Mercedes continues to be quiet about the possible Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series plans, we’ve seen the latest prototypes courtesy of TopSpeed’s new spy shots and to say it’s exciting is an understatement.
Exterior
The test cars are almost identical to the AMG GT R, although the car—its front fascia and its rear end—is more aggressive-looking than any other vehicles in the AMG GT lineup. What sets the prototype apart too are the wheels and the relocated exhaust. There’s no sign of exhaust pipes, though that could easily be hidden behind the diffuser.
Aerodynamics are expected to be better compared to the AMG GT R, but the Black Series might be less track-capable than the GT R.
Interior
Mercedes will probably use the same interior of the GT R in the Black Series. There will be a bunch of race-inspired features inside the cabin. Expect to see sport bucket seats wrapped in Nappa leather, Dinamica microfiber, and the AMG Night Package. The latter includes boot cross member in high-gloss black, steering wheel bezel, shift paddles, and door sills.
A matte black carbon fiber should be optional, as well as more comfortable front seats since the Black Series won’t be designed for the race track.
Drivetrain
The Black Series will be the most powerful version of the GT Series. Following the footsteps of the AMG GT R, the Black Series will pack a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8 engine that makes nearly 600 horsepower. Still, it will be significantly better than the 577 horsepower generated by the GT R.
