We’re Finally Getting A Baby Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Giancarlo Perlas April 5, 2019

Anytime we hear about a luxury crossover with an entry-level price, we get goosebumps. We’ve heard rumors about a G-class-inspired Mercedes-Benz crossover that will be placed somewhere between the GLA and the GLC. It looks like it will finally be launched this April 2019 at the Shanghai Auto Show.

The GLB, as it is now called, will first arrive as a prototype. For now, the automaker is keeping the details under wraps (though we heard it could have an electric powertrain and be called the EQB), but Mercedes did give us a sketch of how the interior will look like.

A funky dashboard—that’s what the new Mercedes-Benz GLB or EQB will have. The dashboard has a wide-high-resolution screen that replaces both the instrument cluster and the infotainment system’s display. All of these are integrated into one screen, the left side of which is dedicated to driver key information such as speed and navigation directions while the right side is for the cutting-edge MBUX infotainment system that is now being used across all of Mercedes’ lineup. The dashboard is wrapped in wood trim and aluminum accents that put a touch of elegance on it.

Like the dashboard, everything else looks upscale in the potential GLB’s or EQB’s driver and front passenger side. The steering wheel and center console are wrapped in dark tan leather and the aircon vents look like they were chiseled from a spaceship.

Reports said that this new crossover will be configured for five passengers though Mercedes may plan to also offer it in seven-seating capacity with three rows of seats. We expect it to have a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’ll be available with different power capacities.
