Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Claims Nurburgring Lap Record
Giancarlo Perlas October 27, 2018The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door just went around the 12.8-mile track of the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Using the AMG GT 63 S version of the car, it set a lap time of 7:25.41. Mercedes immediately went on to claim bragging rights as the automaker said that it’s new record set by a four-door production car.
The claim of Mercedes is hotly contested by Jaguar though. In 2017, the XE SV Project 8 of the British automaker finished a whole lap on the endurance track in 7:21.23. Like the AMG GT 4-Door, it is a four-door production car, although limited only in 300 samples.
The feat of Jaguar was achieved by removing the rear seats of the car. But then again, it is something offered by the auto to its customers in its optional track pack.
Jaguar’s definition of a “four-door production car” seems a stretch. However, it still falls in the segment because the XE SV Project 8 saloon is mass-produced, for sale to the public and road legal.
Determined to make their mark in the segment, Mercedes clarified in their YouTube video description, “With an officially certified and notarized lap time of 7:25:41, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ is now the fastest fully-fledged four-seater production car to ever conquer the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife!”
The statement of Mercedes is something most of us would probably agree on. The German automaker was careful in choosing its words as it stuck with “fastest fully-fledged four-seater production car” phrase. That’s something that the XE SV Project 8 will unlikely oppose because of the deletion of its rear seats while being driven in Nurburgring.
Setting aside the hullabaloo between Merc and Jag, the video just shows how impressive is the AMG GT 4-Door. It managed to get very close to the record held by the XE SV Project 8 in Nurburgring without any modifications at all!
