3 Things We Learned From The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 Spy Video

Giancarlo Perlas May 2, 2018

A new spy video reveals that AMG is still testing the 2018 Mercedes-AMG CLS 53. The video shows not one, but two high-performance versions of the CLS.

It should be noted that the new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 already made its debut in Detroit last January. It was previewed together with the sedan, coupe and convertible versions of the E-Class. The AMG CLS is expected to arrive in the European market a few weeks from now and it is going to the U.S. by fall. The spy video tells us that AMG is probably making a few adjustments to the car before orders for it start piling up.

Here are the three things we can learn from the new spy video of the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53:

1. The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 is Fast

The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 is incredibly agile. Just look at how it went along the corners on the unforgiving track of Nurburgring with ease considering its mass.

With a total weight of 4,200 lbs., the CLS 53 can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds. That’s thanks to its 3.0-liter inline-six engine partnered to an electric motor capable of delivering 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. All that power is directed to a 4MATIC+ variable all-wheel drive system.

The top speed of the auto is 155 mph. Those who want more can install the optional AMG Driver’s Package to increase that to 168 mph.

2. The Engine Noise is a Music to Our Ears

The hybrid powertrain of the CLS 53 certainly gives off an amazing note to our ears. Just turn up the volume of the video and listen to it. The inline-six combustion engine and EQ tech surely complement the quadruple exhausts of the car.

3. The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 Remains Sexy

Since the new CLS 53 was already showcased early this year, the ones in the video are no longer covered in camo. White and gray versions of the vehicle can be seen here. It can be noticed that the units featured in the clip do not have rear spoilers, but the production version of the CLS 53 will have them for sure.

The gray-finished CLS 53 appears to have a roll cage at its back. However, that’s probably for testing purposes only, so don’t look forward to it in the production model.
