Daimler reducing work-week and output expectations

While the US carmakers are lobbying congress and government officials for a bailout package that will save their asses from going belly-up, our beloved Daimler AG is also taking some drastic steps in this economic crisis. Daimler will be reducing the working week at the MB factory in the Sindelfingen factory starting on January 12th. They will adopt a four-day working week and possibly even some three-day work weeks until March 31st.
Daimler is also considering shortening hours at the Bremen, Dusseldorf and Berlin factories to reduce further cost. The Daimler AG announcement comes after BMW, VW, Porsche and even Japanese carmakers (Toyota and Honda) have announced reducing hours for their employees. The German Association of the Automotive Industry said last week that new car sales in 2009 were expected to be the worst since the country’s reunification in 1990. Let’s wish them all good luck, as they’ll need lots of it.
