Winnebago just set a new benchmark with the introduction of its latest model, the Ekko Sprinter. The new camper van based on the versatile Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van chassis is a significant leap from its predecessor, the Ford Transit-based original Ekko. This build is scheduled to debut at the Florida RV SuperShow on January 17 to offer outdoor adventurers with a blend of luxury and exceptional off-road capabilities.
A New Era of Ekko Camper Vans
Besides Mercedes’ superb touch of automotive engineering, the Ekko also boasts a lot of interior space and innovative features poised to set a new standard in the camper van segment. Its enhanced ground clearance, thanks to the Sprinter chassis and all-terrain tires, does a better job than its Transit counterpart in conquering tough terrains.
All-Wheel-Drive and Powertrain Systems
In terms of its drivetrain, the Ekko Sprinter has embraced advancements made by Mercedes tracing back in 2022. The latest iteration comes with a full-time AWD system that primarily operates in rear-wheel drive but can shift up to 50% of torque to the front axle when needed. This system offers a balanced 50/50 torque split, unlike the previous unit’s 65/35 rear/front bias.
Meanwhile, at the heart of this machine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission to ensure smooth and efficient power delivery.
Interior Design and Comfort
The interior of the Ekko Sprinter serves as a testament to Winnebago’s attention to detail and commitment to comfort. Stretching 24.5 feet, it is considerably longer than the Ekko Transit, providing ample space to accommodate up to five sleepers. The primary bedroom at the rear features two single beds with a unique Flex Bed design, allowing them to merge into a queen-size bed.
The optional pop-up roof houses a double bed, ensuring comfortable sleeping arrangements for extra occupants.
Living Space and Amenities
The front lounge area of the Ekko Sprinter has been ingeniously designed to serve multiple purposes. It includes two belted seats and transforms into a cozy lounge or a single bed, showcasing exceptional versatility.
The galley across loses the built-in gas stove seen in the Transit model, replaced by a portable induction cooker, offering flexibility for both indoor and outdoor cooking. Other amenities include a microwave/convection oven, a stainless steel sink, and a sizable 150-L fridge/freezer.
Utility and Off-Grid Capabilities
The Ekko Sprinter shines in its utility and off-grid capabilities. The extended length of the vehicle has allowed for a larger heated gear garage, accessible from multiple sides. It features necessary charging ports and a removable floor liner.
The vehicle is well-equipped for off-grid living with a 320-Ah lithium battery, 530 watts of solar charging, and a 2,000-W inverter. Additional options include extra battery power and a 2,500-W generator. Comfort is maintained with a 13,500-BTU air conditioner and Truma heater, alongside a substantial 189-L fresh water tank.
Pricing
This avant-garde camper van comes with a starting price of US$231,116, positioning it as a premium choice in the market. The Ekko Sprinter’s price reflects its advanced features, quality construction, and the luxury associated with the Mercedes branding.
