Trial Commences for Mercedes Over Dieselgate Scandal

Billions of fines and numerous recall later, the Dieselgate Scandal continues to haunt Mercedes-Benz up to this day. Last Tuesday, the trial for the class-action lawsuit against the automaker commenced in a German court. The lawsuit was filed by Germany’s largest consumer protection and advocacy group called Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband or VZBV. It alleged that the company used devices to manipulate the diesel emissions of its GLK and GLC SUV models to reflect lesser pollutant levels than they do in actual traffic conditions. Mercedes-Benz to Recall 774,000 Vehicles Across Europe

A total of 774,000 diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz vehicles are set to be recalled in Europe. It was after the German government ordered Daimler to recall 238,000 units equipped with illegal software that could manipulate diesel emission readings. Daimler said it would recall all the affected vehicles, according to BBC. However, the company denied of any wrongdoing. The crackdown for vehicles with “cheat devices” continues since Volkswagen admitted three years ago that their autos were fitted with such tech that could mask their real emission figures. Daimler Could Be Slapped with Fine of 3.75 Billion Euros in Connection to Diesel Emissions Scandal

Daimler, the parent of Mercedes-Benz, is in danger of being fined by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The penalty could go up to 3.75 billion euros or ($4.4 billion). This is in relation to the involvement of the automaker in the diesel emissions scandal. According to Spiegel, a German magazine, it was Andreas Scheuer, the Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Infrastructure, who threatened to impose that heavy fine to Daimler.
