The Mercedes-Benz Antos distribution trucks with radar-based Sideguard Assist make for the perfect delivery vehicles that traditional brewery Hofbräu München opted for five of these trucks to go around urban traffic distributing to their clients. “For us, it’s absolutely essential that drivers and all other road users are as safe as possible on the roads,” Jürgen Breitsameter, head of logistics at Hofbräu München, said in a statement. Daimler Trucks & Buses is the only manufacturer to offer a safety assistance system fully integrated into their vehicle’s architecture. Daimler and China will deepen that strange bond brewing between them as Mercedes-Benz looks to focus on electric and connected cars. The German automaker is now seriously in talks to strengthen partnerships with Chinese suppliers for its auto parts. Wilko Stark, member of the board for procurement at Mercedes-Benz, said that the company’s shift to electric and connected cars made Mercedes more dependent on battery cell chemistry and connected vehicles expertise, two facets that China has been dealing and managing in the past years. The low sales figures of the Mercedes-Benz SLC was recently confirmed by Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche. This puts the future of the convertible in jeopardy. “These speciality cars have lost their share in our total portfolio,” Autocar quoted Zetsche. “For a particularly long time, China has led growth, and China shows little interest in cars such as these,” the Daimler boss added. “Our portfolio is not something defined for eternity. Daimler, the parent of Mercedes-Benz, is in danger of being fined by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The penalty could go up to 3.75 billion euros or ($4.4 billion). This is in relation to the involvement of the automaker in the diesel emissions scandal. Daimler warned their suppliers of a fall in the demand for diesel cars. Now, the company is forcing them to help in electrifying the entire Mercedes-Benz range going to 2022. According to Reuters, Daimler released a statement on February 13 warning, “a fall in demand for diesel cars and a switch to electric vehicles could force it to prop up its supplier base.” Before going further though, it should be noted that the term “electrify” of Mercedes does not mean producing pure electric-powered vehicles only similar to Tesla’s strategy.
