Second-Gen Mercedes-AMG GT Caught on Cam During Testing

Recently, a next-generation version of the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe was spotted in Nurburging and later in the alps. Being the spiritual successor of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, stakes are running high on this one, and expectations are definitely over the roof.

The AMG GT is now on its way to a second-generation series. It was introduced in 2014 at the Paris Motor Show and has undergone a major facelift in 2017. The range also spawned several versions, including the roadster, the GT3 and GT4 race cars, and the limited Black Series.

The new spy video does not reveal much about the design of the AMG GT because of the heavy camouflage concealing its exterior. However, we can see the outline of some of its important parts like the air inlets embedded in the front bumper, chunkier rear fenders, squinting headlamps and taillights, Panamericana front grille, and quadruple exhaust ports.

The real treat comes in the sweet sound coming from the car as we turn up our volume. The engine noise unmistakably hints at a V8 under the hood. It could be similar to the current one’s 4.0-liter turbo setup but with some tweaks or a mild hybrid combo to bring its output further up. There’s possibly an inline-four in the lower trim of the auto, too. A plug-in hybrid variant is not far in the mix as well considering that Mercedes has already successfully rolled out the AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4 last year, which is capable of up to 831 hp and 1,033 lb-ft of torque.

Judging the age of the first-gen Mercedes-AMG GT range that we have now, its successor may not be far off in the near future. With that, we expect the second-gen series to debut in the winter of 2022 as a 2023 model-year car.
