Mercedes Issues a Recall for the GLE and GLS SUVs

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS

Mercedes-Benz just issued a recall for the GLE and GLS sport utility vehicle models. Around 9,000 units of the models are affected by the announcement.

Affected Mercedes GLE and GLS Units

According to Cars.com, the 2018 year models of the Mercedes-Benz GLE350, GLE350 4Matic, GLS450 4Matic and GLS550 4Matic are covered by the recall. The Mercedes-AMG versions of the range are also affected, which include the GLE43 4Matic, GLE63 4Matic, GLE63S 4Matic and GLS63 4Matic.

Reason for the Recall

The problem stems from the rear brake caliper pistons. The source said that the coating of the components may not have been properly applied. This would result in a gas leak towards the brake hydraulic circuit. If that happens, the braking performance of the vehicle will be impeded, which increases the risk of a collision.

How to Find Out If Your Vehicle is Affected by the Recall

Owners of the said models will be notified by Mercedes starting next month. Alternatively, customers may call the automaker via 800-367-6372 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 888-327-4236.

They can go to the website of NHTSA too to find out if their vehicles are included in the recall. All they have to do is enter their GLE or GLS SUV’s vehicle identification number (VIN) on the agency’s homepage.

The Solution

Mercedes dealerships will shoulder the repairs for free. The fix involves bleeding the axle brake system to remove the air pockets. Though not mentioned in the report, the defective coating may have to be mended as well.
