Mercedes-Benz recalls hundred thousands of its units due to faulty Takata air bags.

Mercedes-Benz recalls some of its vehicles in the United States for air bag issues. According to NBC, around 705,000 units were affected by the recall.

Based on the source, the vehicles covered by the move were equipped with air bags manufactured by Takata Corp. The problem with the said air bags is that they have the tendency to explode with deadly force.

The Takata airbags have the risk of overinflating, which can shoot shrapnels to the passenger area when it pops out. These have been blamed to be the cause of death of at least 10 people in the U.S.

Aside from the Mercedes-Benz vehicles, 136,000 units of Daimler vans were also recalled. The company stated that they made the decision as a precautionary measure. Overall, the report estimates that the recalls cost the company $400 million.

The post did not mention yet the specific models that are being recalled by Mercedes and its parent company.

Not only the three-pointed star brand is having the problem. Many other automakers in the area were affected too like Audi, BMW, Daewoo, Saab, Honda, Volkswagen, Mazda and Ford. NBC revealed 20 million vehicles in the U.S. alone were covered by the recall.

The source claimed Takata Chairman Shigehisa Takada apologized for the issue last year. Recently, he released a formal statement saying that they are fully cooperating with regulators in relation to the problem. Takada further said that he has no intention of resigning in the middle of the crisis they are facing now.
