Mercedes-Benz Launches Fingerprint Payment System In Select Models

Mercedes-Benz proudly announced the launch of its new service that allows its users to pay for digital services and hardware upgrades by simply using the built-in fingerprint sensor of its cars. The in-car payment feature is made possible via the Delegated Authentication and Cloud Token Framework tech of Visa. The luxury car brand claimed that it is the first automaker to adopt the system.

The new feature is only available for German customers for now. It’s initially offered in models equipped with fingerprint sensors, including the EQS, EQE, S-Class, C-Class, and GLC. The company is looking to integrate the tech into its wider range of vehicles and expand its market in Europe before the current year ends.

How It Works

The new payment system allows the user to link his/her Visa credit or debit card with his/her Mercedes me account. Next, he/she will be required to activate Mercedes pay+ via the MBUX infotainment system.

The program utilizes a two-factor authentication function in addition to the fingerprint scan when purchasing in the Mercedes me app. It effectively turns the vehicle into a payment portal without the need to supply a PIN on its infotainment system or without the use of a personal mobile device to verify transactions.

In addition to the authentication systems in place, Visa Cloud Tokens add an extra layer of security in encrypting, storing, and safeguarding all the crucial personal and financial information supplied by users.

What It Does

Currently, the new payment system allows Mercedes users to be able to activate and utilize many features of their vehicles locked within a paywall or subscriptions services. These include Remote Engine Start, Remote Parking Assist, Adaptive High-Beam Assist, and Rear Axle Steering, to name a few.

The fingerprint system will be upgraded to accommodate other services like refueling and charging later this year for the added convenience of its users. With this, they will no longer have to use their pin when paying for such services.

Demand

The company projected that there will be around 4.7 billion in-car payment transactions by 2026. The company stated that paying for fuel will be the most common use for this, and it is expected to take a 48% slice of all the transactions in terms of volume five years from now.

Presently, Mercedes users in various markets can already settle their fuel bills via the Mercedes me app installed on a smartphone or the MBUX infotainment system using a PIN code. However, the fingerprint system will help streamline the process for their convenience.

Overall, Mercedes foresees a huge demand for such a feature as it greatly enhances the convenience of its customers.
