Mercedes-Benz has been very busy in refreshing and expanding its SUV lineup lately. Recently, there were a lot of rumors saying that it might add another SUV convertible model in the future.
The speculations were fuelled after an interview of CarAdvice with Wolf-Dieter Kurz, the person responsible in the development of the future sports utility truck of Mercedes. It should be noted though that his answers during the discussion only appeared to be weighing on the matter or not definitive.
According to the report, he said they are still exploring markets for it because the convertible currently belongs to a very narrow niche in the SUV portfolio. He added that they are still talking about the subject within the company and a decision is yet to be made.
It should be noted that a convertible SUV is no longer new to Mercedes. The G-Class range already had these decades ago, but the units were only offered in few markets. This justifies the statement of Kurz that its demand is small compared to the other models of the brand. In 2013, the production of the G-Class cabriolets came to an end.
So far, the coupe version of the GLE and the GLC concept coupe were nothing short of amazing. The designs featured in the photos of the two that we have seen were very striking. As we know, the coupes of the three-pointed star marque were mostly succeeded by convertibles. Well, that was true in its cars anyway. But the SUV coupes almost certainly call for cabrio follow ups.
Although there were mixed reactions about the likely introduction of GLE, GLC or even a GLS top downs in the future, it might be good to wait and see how Mercedes will treat their styling later. Besides, we are no longer talking of the G-Class cabrio here, but entirely something new for the brand.
