Mercedes-Benz Future Bus Makes Its World Premiere

Weltpremiere: Mercedes-Benz Future Bus mit CityPilot – Meilenstein auf dem Weg zum autonom fahrenden Stadtbus

Daimler recently unveiled the Mercedes-Benz Future Bus. The passenger vehicle is equipped with an advanced technology called the CityPilot, which features autonomous driving capabilities.

The new Mercedes bus aims to address congestion, traffic and environmental problems in big cities. In addition, the CityPilot technology embedded in it ensures more safety, efficiency and comfort to its occupants. The futuristic vehicle also offers enhanced connectivity plus radar and camera systems.

The CityPilot technology is actually an evolution of the system found in the Mercedes-Benz Actros truck with Highway Pilot. However, it is tailored to cater to city bus commuters. The high-edge feature recognizes obstacles along the way like pedestrians, structures and other vehicles. It can brake automatically when such need arises.

Furthermore, it can detect bus stops in its location. When it does, it automatically stops there to open its doors to passengers, and close them again when it is ready to go. The company added that it can even drive through tunnels without any problems.

A dozen on-board cameras and radar systems scan and monitor the immediate surroundings of the Mercedes-Benz Future Bus. The technology provides accuracy in terms of determining the obstacles encountered by the vehicle along its route.

Daimler demonstrated the cutting-edge features of the bus over a 20-kilometer stretch with narrow bends, tunnels and bus stops. The demo showed how the bus performs too within high-speeds. So far, the vehicle has passed the expectations it set with flying colors.
