What’s the greenest, most eco-friendly truck right now? If you answered the Mercedes-Benz Actros 1851 GigaSpace, then you’re right! The particular Euro VI-compliant commercial vehicle model was recently awarded with the ‘Green Truck 2013’ award, determined by Trucker and VerkehrsRundschau magazine editorial teams.
The key criteria for the award include fuel consumption (test results for which were recorded by the aforementioned magazines) and CO2 emissions. Max payload and exhaust emission classification also factored into the rankings.
The Actros 1851 GigaSpace’s fuel consumption was shown to be nearly one whole liter lower compared to the second-ranked commercial vehicle. The Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) technology is seen as key to this result, as the GPS-based system aims to deliver optimum fuel consumption depending on the topography of the truck’s route.
According to Head of Truck Product Engineering Heavy/Medium Platform CoE, Dr. Jörg Zürn, the win “provides conclusive, independent confirmation of the results of the development work we have undertaken with the objective of creating a new, environmentally compatible truck that would comply with the Euro VI emissions standard.”
In addition, 3 of the top 10 places in the environmental ranking were occupied by Mercedes-Benz Actros model variants.
