Mercedes-AMG Prepares For Electrified Future With First Dedicated EV

  • Mercedes-AMG is preparing to launch its first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) architecture.
  • The AMG.EA platform is rumored to debut by late 2025.
  • The recently spied Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door EV is expected to carry the new platform.
Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe EV

Mercedes-AMG, renowned for its signature V8 and V12 engines, is embarking on a transformative journey into the electric vehicle (EV) market. With the automotive industry gradually shifting towards sustainable energy to meet its ESG commitments, the performance division of the three-pointed star marque is gearing up to unveil its first fully electric vehicle.

According to rumors, the groundbreaking EV will debut in late 2025. It will be built on AMG’s proprietary AMG.EA platform, which expected to herald a new era for the luxury performance brand.

A New Generation of Electric Performance

Based on the latest spy shots, the incoming EV from AMG will take the form of a large, sleek, four-door hatchback, embodying the essence of modern design and high performance. This new model aims to offer an electric alternative to the current GT 4-Door Coupe, potentially carrying forward the name while coexisting with its gasoline-powered counterpart for some time.

The Vision AMG concept inspired the design of this new EV, which was revealed in 2022 and showcased the advanced capabilities of the AMG.EA platform.

Innovative Engineering and Design

At the heart of AMG’s new EV lies the AMG.EA platform. The brand will specifically develop the modular architecture for high-performance electric cars. This platform promises to deliver exceptional performance, aided by the use of axial-flux motors developed by Yasa, a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz.

Yasa motors feature a compact size and lightweight engineering with impressive power output. A single motor can produce up to 480 hp. With the potential integration of twin electric motors, the vehicle could achieve nearly 1,000 hp.

Advanced Aerodynamics and Efficiency

Efficiency is a key focus for AMG’s first dedicated EV. The sleek design, coupled with active aerodynamic features, aims to maximize the vehicle’s range and performance. Spy shots of the prototype reveal an active rear spoiler.

AMG designed it enhance aerodynamic efficiency and reduce drag coefficient. Additionally, the vehicle may even incorporate a printed logo similar to those used in AMG’s Formula 1 cars.

Legacy and Experience in Electric Mobility

AMG is not entirely new to the EV scene. The brand’s first foray into electric mobility dates back to 2014 with the SLS AMG Electric Drive. At that time, it was Mercedes’ most powerful EV with a 740 hp output.

Since then, AMG has accumulated extensive experience in electric powertrains, particularly through its involvement in Formula 1. This experience has provided valuable insights into energy management and recovery, which will be instrumental in developing their new EV.

Future Prospects: Expanding the Electric Lineup

Before the arrival of this dedicated EV, AMG plans to introduce performance versions of electrified Benz models. These include variants of the CLA, C-Class, and GLC.

These products will set the stage for the brand’s full transition to electric mobility, showcasing AMG’s commitment to innovation and performance in the EV market.
