Mercedes-AMG F1-Inspired Supercar in the Works

Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers hinted that another standalone model might follow the GT Coupe. Although information is still scarce, the new car would sit between the brand’s road car and the Formula One cars of Mercedes.

Moers said in an interview featured in Autocar that the auto will be totally distinct to the Mercedes-AMG GT. The source speculated that instead of the traditional front engine design featured in the SLS and GT, the next standalone AMG car would carry an advanced mid-engine car with hybrid powertrain.

Based on an insider, the supercar will be equipped with a compact hybrid power unit. The technology employed in the Silver Arrows in F1 would be carried over to it. That means it will have a more lightweight design and electrical power.

The source added the planned car will take off from the innovations presented by the SLS Electric Drive. Then it will be combined with petrol power. A V6 engine will likely be used as a primary power source because of its size, range, and sound.

As promising as it looks, the car is not expected to have a million-pound price tag. It will not be a limited-edition hypercar too similar to the LaFerrari, Porsche 918 and McLaren P1. Instead, it will probably compete against the McLaren 650S and the Ferrari 488 GTB. The cost will possibly fall around the £200,000 range. It should be close to the BMW i8, but the different performance of the AMG car will have a strong edge against its said rival.

Furthermore, AMG might maximize the potential of the car by introducing coupe, convertible and special editions of it.
