Mercedes lessons at the 2015 Chinese Grand Prix

The Chinese Grand Prix continues to be kind to Lewis Hamilton, as the Mercedes driver took the victory in this year’s race ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg. Here are some points that were evident with the race and the outcome.

Lewis Hamilton cruised but still showed speed where it counted

Mercedes Lewis Hamilton wins Chinese Grand Prix 2015 Nico RosbergHamilton recorded a Grand Chelem (or Grand Slam) at the 2015 Chinese Grand Prix, which means he took pole position in qualifying, recorded the race’s fastest lap, and won while leading from the opening lap up until the end of race. This was Hamilton’s second such feat, after tallying one at last year’s Malaysian Grand Prix.

While Ferrari had great pace, they couldn’t offset the way Hamilton raced and the superiority of the Mercedes setup. The Mercedes driver kept his own teammate and the Ferrari cars at arms length and sped up when it counted, unleashing lap times around half a second faster than the rest of the field when he neared his two scheduled pit stops.

With the win, Hamilton now leads all drivers with 68 points, extending his lead over Vettel to 13. Meanwhile, finishing second means Rosberg–who is third among drivers at the moment–has cut Vettel’s lead to just 4 points.

Things are not so rosy within the Silver Arrows team

The post-game interview was littered with some interesting jabs from the two Mercedes drivers–jabs aimed at each other. Here are some of the highlights:

“And, as I said, my goal was to look after my car. I had no real threat from Nico through the whole race. So, I just managed it and got to really enjoy it, to be honest.” – Hamilton

“It’s just now interesting to hear from you, Lewis, that you were just thinking about yourself with the pace in front, and necessarily that was compromising my race.” – Rosberg

“It’s not my job to look after Nico’s race… If Nico wanted to get by he could have tried but he didn’t.” – Hamilton

Well now, that’s a bit more intense than anything we saw in the last year. Looks like the internal rivalry is heating up again, and hopefully there are no team orders that will get in the way of this competition.

Ferrari still has a long way to go

Mercedes is comfortably ahead with 119 points to Ferrari’s 79. While Mercedes comfortably won this one, it’s clear that Ferrari has really good race pace, and the tire usage and overall strategy of the team is sound enough that it can seriously pose a challenge in any given race. But if Mercedes can control its tires and control the race with any relative ease, then it’s game over.

It should only be a matter of time before a red car repeats as a race winner this season. Until such time, though, Mercedes should continue to roll.
