If you find the eyebrow lights of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class not bright or flashy enough for your taste, you are alone in this world. One member in MBWorld forums named jptaylor was also taking issue with the fact that his C-Class eyebrows are just too dim for his preference. So, what he did was modify them to make them achieve a better illumination. The photo above is the end product of channeling his inner-MacGyver.
According to him, the task is very simple and it does not cost much. It does, however, take a lot of guts to have the heart to modify your own C-Class headlamps. The tools that you will need for this are a flat-head screwdriver, a $9 panel popping tool, a $30 white Alpena Max LED (or similar product), and an oven. Yes, you read the last item right, you will actually need an oven.
Here are the steps he did:
- First, he popped open all the bulbs of his car and removed all the plugs, ballast, clips and the removable stuff connected to them.
- Second, he used the oven to loosen the adhesive holding the lenses. What he did was preheat the oven to to 210F. Next, he placed the bulbs facedown using a towel as a base for 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Then, he removed the torx screws connecting the bezel within the lens to separate the eyebrow.
- Third, he broke the bowl-shaped reflector in front of the bulb socket. It is actually the shiny thing that looks like the surface of a disco ball.
- Fourth, he installed the Max LED strip at the rear of the eyebrow reflector.
- The last step involved putting the headlight components back together again and installing them back in the car. Somewhere at this point, he used the oven again to slightly melt the adhesive holding the lenses so he could reuse it to prop the lens in. Don’t forget to put the wires back too.
