Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG, just released a teaser for a new Mercedes hypercar on his Instagram account. The short video shows a roadster with retro-futuristic design and inspired by the old Silver Arrows Formula 1 race cars.
Based on the caption of the video, the car is bound for Pebble Beach, California, which strongly suggests that its unveiling might fall at the 2018 Concours D’Elegance event happening on August 26. Then looking at the hashtags, the product is indeed inspired by the Silver Arrows, and it will showcase the EQ technology of Mercedes.
Mercedes also teased the hypercar concept through photos last month. The company revealed that the vehicle’s moniker is “Aesthetic Progressive Luxury”—which is quite a mouthful. The one-off hypercar will sit on top of the upcoming EQ range, and it might even become the lineup’s flagship car.
The Mercedes hypercar appeared in a mold that unmistakably carries the design elements of the old F1 Silver Arrows. Its exterior styling includes an open-air cockpit, long nose, large wheel arches and massive center fin at the rear. The rear wing will keep the stability of the auto at high speeds.
At least two electric motors are expected to power up the vehicle. The power will likely be directed to all four wheels.
