AMG One: Still The Fastest Car To Conquer Nurburgring

  • The year 2024 ends with the Mercedes-AMG One unbeaten as the fastest car to set a lap at Nurburgring.

Nurburgring has been a demanding proving ground for automakers looking to get the bragging rights of having the fastest road-legal car in production. As 2024 wrapped up, nothing still beats the accomplishment of the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar on the circuit.

The AMG One first set a record as the fastest road-legal car in production to set a lap at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in October 2022. It did that with a time of 6:35.183 minutes, beating the previous record held by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with Manthey Performance Kit. The latter notably unseated the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series during its feat.

Almost two years later, the AMG One surpassed its own record. In September 2024, it finished a lap at Nurburgring in just 6:29.090.

Maro Engel, a professional racing driver and Mercedes brand ambassador since 2027, was responsible for AMG’s latest achievement. He and his group attributed their success to better driving conditions on track compared to their earlier efforts.

Mercedes equipped the AMG One with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires that allowed Engel to optimize the performance of the 1,049 hp hypercar. Meanwhile, the 15 degrees Celsius air and 20 degrees Celsius asphalt temperatures offered a dry track and the best grip for the veteran driver.

To date, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Prototype is the runner-up in the segment reigned by the AMG One. The 1,527 hp hypercar’s best lap time in the same circuit is 6:46.87 minutes. Next is the Ford Mustang GTD, with a 6:57.685-minute lap time.
