Mercedes F1 W14 To Have Its One Last Run Before Retirement

Giancarlo Perlas December 1, 2023

The Formula 1 season just concluded, giving Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 second place in the Constructors’ Standings. However, the W14 F1 car’s job is not yet over as it will have one final run on track before it’s finally retired in the Mercedes-Benz heritage collection.

The Mercedes F1 W14’s Final Salute

According to FanNation, the outgoing W14 F1 car will have a last hoorah on the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours as part of Pirelli’s tire development. The 2.741-mile track was part of the F1 races from 1991 until 2008.

Apart from the source, the W14’s involvement in the Pirelli event does not appear to generate enough publicity. Most of it was due to the unit’s dismal performance in the 2023 F1 season, which never got it any wins despite being responsible for putting Mercedes at the P2 of the Constructors.

The Mercedes F1 W14 in the 2023 Season

The W14 is the first F1 car of Mercedes to fail to log any wins for the 2023 season since the Mercedes MGP W02 during the Ross Brawn administration. But then again, it gathered 409 points for the team to give it a runner-up finish for this season.

The decisive achievement of the group came at the last leg of the F1 schedule in Abu Dhabi. The combined points of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton for bagging P3 and P9, respectively, was enough for Mercedes to keep a three-point lead against Ferrari in the Contructors.

Amid the consolatory celebration, the team is contending with the reality that it’s far from Red Bull in the tally. The Honda-powered team capped the year with 860 points — a whopping 451 points ahead of Mercedes F1. It won almost every race this year except one in Singapore where Hamilton notably got one of his six podiums.
