New Mercedes-Benz Tech Frees Itself From Getting Stuck In Mud

A new technology from German automaker Mercedes will allow drivers to free its GLE vehicles from getting stuck in the mud with only so much of an effort. Called the E-Active Body Control feature, the technology will automatically and quickly raise and lower the suspension several times to change the ground pressure under the tires and assist traction by removing the mud deposits that get stuck under the wheel.
Paul Harmon, product manager of the GLE models, called the tech the “Hail Mary” to getting stuck in the mud or sand. This is great for GLE drivers who love off-road adventures and taking their GLE cars when they climb hills and cross rivers. The E-Active Body Control will give additional traction and stability during off-road driving.
The free-driving mode under the E-Active Body Control feature is the newest tech to roll out from the Germany-based car manufacturer. It uses a combination of hydropneumatic active suspension and Mercedes’ Airmatic air suspension system. The feature lets the spring and damping forces to be individually controlled at each wheel. This counteracts the body roll, pitch, and squat, which helps the vehicle free itself quite easily when it does get stuck in the mud.
Harmon said the counteract body rolls allow the cars to function like a motorbike “and leans the car into turns.”
The free-driving mode is available as an option on the 2020 GLE 450 4MATIC crossover. It will also be available to other models as long as they have the EQ Boost 48-volt electric system.
