Waste Collection Vehicle Mercedes-Benz Econic Gets Fitted With Active Brake Assist 4
Giancarlo Perlas May 8, 2018The fourth generation of Mercedes’ Active Brake Assist will be fitted in the Mercedes-Benz Econic, a waste collection vehicle in Germany. The automaker said that the fourth generation of its assistance system will protect the most vulnerable road users—the pedestrians.
As the waste collection vehicle gets deployed in both urban areas and the residential areas, so accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists are a part of the risk that drivers take. The confusing road and traffic conditions are part of everyday life, but such dangerous situations could be evaded by the Econic, thanks to the Active Brake Assist 4.
The system is able to warn the driver of a collision and it automatically initiates partial braking. This enables the driver to avoid a collision by utilizing the maximum full-stop braking or steering the vehicle from the potential accident. Because the vehicle is in partial brake, the driver would also have time to blow the horn and warn pedestrians.
Active Brake Assist 4 has been tuned particularly to address the demands of a highly urban life. The system is also able to detect moving pedestrians in any traffic situation. They can detect if the pedestrian is walking into the truck’s lane from the side, emerging from behind an obstacle, or moving along the truck’s lane.
The Econic is already fitted with the Active Brake Assist 3, which has already passed the stringent EU requirements that would be introduced in November 2018. This would put the Active Brake Assist 4 a generation ahead of the current regulations.
