1979 Mercedes-Benz G-Class in an Amber-Like Encasing Displayed at 2018 NAIAS

The same Mercedes-Benz G-Class encased in a block of amber, which was featured in an advertisement released earlier, was put on display at the 2018 North American International Auto Show. Sitting at the Cobo Hall entrance was the 1979 model of the iconic SUV to hype its latest version making its debut at the event.

According to Daimler, the material used around the 1979 Mercedes-Benz G-Class was made of synthetic resin. The block weighs 44.4 tonnes. The cast measuring 5.5 meters long, 2.55 meters wide and 3.1 meters high was created in 90 days. The exhibit highlights the timeless feature of the G-Class.

The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be officially unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in January 14, 2018. However, we already have an idea about most of its features because of the several teasers released by its maker and photo leaks. Previously, images of its interior design, testing in Schockl and exterior surfaced online.

A luxurious interior awaits the occupants of the vehicle. High-class two-tone leather adorn its surfaces with chrome highlights lining its important elements like the air vents, controls, handles, steering wheel and pedals. A wide touchscreen display was mounted on its central dashboard too.

Though we are yet to determine the real score about the G-Class’ mechanical specs, its last test drive in Schockl demonstrated its amazing climbing ability. Then, Mercedes revealed that its power will be distributed via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. A new driving program called the “G-Mode” will be introduced as well, which will optimize its performance off-road.

On the other hand, spy shots of the G-Class showed that it will remain true to its signature boxy body. Only minor changes have been made in the styling of the SUV. Among them were the bumpers, lighting and grille.
