The Mercedes-AMG GT R makes its debut at the Brooklands circuit in Great Britain on June 24, 2016

The Mercedes-AMG GT R just made its world premiere. The sports car is the street-legal version of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and it surpasses the Mercedes-AMG GT S in terms of power and performance. Let us take a closer look at the GT R engine.

Based on the specs provided by Mercedes-Benz USA, the GT R is equipped with the handcrafted 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine of AMG. The power unit features dry sump lubrication, which maintains a stable oil supply even with high lateral forces. It also allows the V8 engine to be installed lower. In turn, it puts the car’s center of gravity closer to the road for high lateral acceleration.

The engine of the GT R has a displacement of 3,982 cc. The output of the car is 577 hp at 6,250 rpm. The unit produces 74 hp more than the GT S. Then the GT R’s peak torque is 516 lb-ft at 1,900-5,500 rpm.

Combined with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that distributes power to the rear wheels plus the lightweight construction of the auto, the numbers allow the car to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in an estimated 3.5 seconds. The power unit takes the top speed of the GT R to 198 mph too.

The boost in performance was made possible through the installation of new turbochargers with modified compressor machining plus sharpened engine mapping and smaller wastegate aneroid capsule. The exhaust ports of the car have been improved and the combustion process was retuned as well.
