Is this the Mercedes-Maybach E-Class?

Will there be a Mercedes-Maybach E-Class? Rumors, spy shots and a new video suggest that the three-pointed star marque might be working on the ultra-luxurious variant of the E-Class.

YouTube user walkoART recently posted a short video of a camouflaged variant of the E-Class. What makes it interesting is that the E-Class has a longer wheelbase than the standard. Therefore, the source speculates that we may be looking at a Mercedes-Maybach version of the car. The auto can be seen being driven inside a testing facility and in a public road.

However, the interview of Ola Källenius, member of the board of management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz Cars marketing and sales, indicates that the Mercedes-Maybach badge will only be used in the “highest exclusivity corner of the Mercedes-Benz family.” That means only the S-Class and the GLS SUV will get extra-opulent variants bearing the Mercedes-Maybach logo.

Unlike the Mercedes-AMG formula that can be applied to all models of the brand as long as they possess a range-topping engine coupled with higher level of sporty appearance, the Mercedes-Maybach treatment only belongs to the flagship car and SUV of Mercedes-Benz.

Basing from Källenius statement, it is more likely that the car seen in the video is only a long wheelbase version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It is probably bound for the Chinese market where a lot of rich buyers prefer being chauffeured to their destinations, and more legroom at the rear passenger area is highly desired.
