UPS to upgrade to Mercedes-Benz Sprinter delivery vans

Ryan Joseph Ramos December 31, 2014

UPS will soon be adding the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to its fleet of delivery vans, an upgrade from the recently discontinued Mercedes-Benz Vario line of heavy commercial vans.

UPS chooses Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vanTo be more specific, UPS has ordered the new Sprinter 513 BlueTec model to replace the Vario. The 127 horsepower van is the result of development that was made together between Mercedes-Benz, UPS, and Spier the body manufacturer. This way, the parcel service gets a delivery van that can specifically fill its needs.

First and foremost, this new Sprinter features a high loading capacity that’s perfect for delivery of packages handled by UPS on a daily basis. An enlarged passenger-side door should help the delivery guy load and unload packages faster.

Spier is responsible for the cargo section of the body as well as the bonnet, which will then go on top of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 513 BlueTec long-wheelbase variant. Three different body lengths comprise the variants UPS will use, and they go by the names UPS P60, P70, and P80.

This new Sprinter made specifically for UPS will first be rolled out in the parcel service’s operations in Germany, Great Britain, and Ireland. The first unit is expected to be delivered to the company sometime in August 2015.

We’ve seen some pretty neat custom Sprinters in action, much like the one converted by INKAS into a bank vault and the nifty-looking Sprinter of Tyrese Gibson. However, with the look and natural application of the UPS Sprinter, this should also figure among the top Sprinter modifications we’ve seen recently.
