First Standalone Electric SUV Based On AMG.EA Platform Teased

  • Mercedes-AMG revealed that it will make a standalone SUV using its proprietary AMG.EA platform.
  • The electric SUV will likely get Yasa’s electric motor technology, which Mercedes-Benz previewed under the Vision One-Eleven.

Previously, Mercedes-AMG teased an electric sedan that will carry the AMG.EA platform. The high-performance brand of the three-pointed star marque plans to unveil it by next year. Interestingly, the same architecture will be used in its first standalone SUV.

SUV Based on AMG.EA Platform

A Historic Milestone for AMG

The event marks the first time for Mercedes-AMG to create a completely in-house SUV. This is also the second electric vehicle (EV) to benefit from the AMG.EA platform.

The still unnamed electric SUV will join the ranks of the GT, the current generation of the SL, and SLS models, which will be entirely made by AMG. It’s the sixth standalone vehicle in the brand’s portfolio. Meanwhile, Mercedes’ subsidiary will offer the EV alongside its other high-performance SUVs, including the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV.

According to AMG CEO Michael Schiebe, SUVs have been among their most popular models over the years. The new line of the company’s products goes in line with its “AMG Fist, EV Second” philosophy that puts above all AMG’s qualities of emotion and performance over its excellent EV character.

Powertrain for the AMG.EA-Based SUV

The company’s latest press release was mum on the powertrain of the upcoming SUV based on the AMG.EA. However, it will likely utilize Yasa’s technology for both the electric electric sedan and SUV of the platform.

Yasa's Electric Motor for the Vision One-Eleven

Yasa is a British company acquired by the Mercedes-Benz Group in 2021. The acquisition brought the development of the cutting-edge, disc-shaped axial-flux motors previewed in the Vision One-Eleven.

The version shown in the concept last year featured a 53-pound engine with 480 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The involvement of AMG in the process has the potential to unlock more of the numbers, which could potentially rival its more potent offerings.
