The three-pointed star marque is gearing up to launch the next-generation Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe, and several prototypes have been spotted at the Green Hell during the range’s final testing phase. While the upcoming vehicle’s official reveal is still months away, here’s what we know so far about this exciting new model based on the spy video here, previous spy shots, and tidbits of hints spilled by Mercedes-Benz.
Competitors of the Mercedes-AMG GT V8 Versions
The quad exhaust tip design and aggressive engine soundtrack suggest that the spotted prototypes in Nurburgring are V8 versions of the upcoming GT Coupe, designed to compete with the Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S. The vehicle is expected to come in lesser versions as well, likely with an inline-six, as seen in the “53”-badged models.
Based on a closer examination of the subject in the spy video here, a major overhaul in the car is its new 2+2 seating configuration that mirrors the SL. This makes the coupe more practical without sacrificing its aggressive and sporty aura.
Initial Lineup
The upcoming AMG GT Coupe will probably take inspiration from the initial lineup of the SL roadster, offering “55” and “63” models with a shared twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. The “55” variant is predicted to deliver 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, while the “63” variant is expected to provide a more powerful output of 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.
There’s also a possibility that the GT Coupe will feature a four-cylinder, plug-in hybrid setup, similar to the electrified 2.0-liter in the base “43” version of the mechanically related SL roadster.
Possible All-Wheel Drive
It should be noted that the Sport Leicht will be offered with all-wheel drive for the first time. However, it is yet to be determined whether or not its fixed-roof GT cousin will also be equipped with the 4MATIC system.
E Performance Version
The E Performance variant will most likely occupy the highest position in the GT lineup, unless AMG chooses to introduce another Black Series model for the upcoming generation. With the GT 63 S E Performance generating an impressive 831 horsepower and 1,033 pound-feet of torque, the upcoming hybrid V8 coupe is also expected to deliver considerable power.
One of the Last Mercedes Models to Offer a V8
As Mercedes aims to streamline its range by discontinuing various models, the AMG GT Coupe stands out as a model that has managed to survive the cut. As the automaker turns to smaller engines, the GT Coupe is poised to become one of the last models that will still offer a V8 powertrain.
Expected Reveal Date
The spotted red prototype here has lost much of its camouflage, so the official reveal of the GT Coupe is forecasted to take place in the coming months. The public debut of the model is expected to be scheduled for early September at IAA Munich.
The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe promises to be a thrilling addition to the AMG lineup, with various versions, including V8 and plug-in hybrid options, and impressive power. We can’t wait to see it in action.
