2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Goes Plug-in Hybrid

We are only more than a week away from the official unveiling of the new Mercedes-AMG SL roadster, and it looks like its maker has more trims for it than what we originally thought. New spy shots suggest that the car is getting a plug-in hybrid model.

The car remains in heavy camouflage, unlike the recent models we have seen so far. However, the auto in the spy shots from Motor1 is unmistakably the AMG SL, because its form is basically the same as the one leaked earlier this month.

The exposed areas of the wrap show us the AMG SL’s thin headlamps, Panamericana vertical grille design, huge air intakes at the front bumper, and sports wheels. What gives it away as a hybrid is its charging port located at the right taillight if viewed from the rear. The zebra patterns of the covers make it hard to see the panel located under the right taillight, but a closer and careful look would reveal it.

There are no details yet about the powertrains of the new AMG SL but sources say that its top trim model will likely carry a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 831 hp and 1,033 lb-ft torque similar to the AMG GT 63 S E Performance. Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid is rumored to get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine partnered with an electric motor bringing its total output to 578 hp. All the power goes to all four wheels and is distributed via a nine-speed automatic.

The Mercedes-AMG SL was initially scheduled to debut on October 20, but it has been pushed back to 28.
