The Munich Auto Show is packed with major releases from the three-pointed star marque. As we have predicted, the Mercedes-AMG EQS EV is one of the new products highlighting the event. The sedan is the first EQ model to be integrated into the AMG brand.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the AMG EQS “is tailor-made for car enthusiasts who are looking for a combination of innovative electric mobility in a luxurious ambience, coupled with sportiness and agile driving dynamics.” The car is expected to hit US dealerships by early next year, and it looks like it will be priced north of its Benz variant’s $125,000.
Key Technical Data
The AMG EQS possesses two permanently agitated synchronous motors (PSM) with 649 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque in its standard format. Fitting it with the AMG Dynamic Plus package increases the figures to 751 hp and 752 lb-ft. All that power goes to a fully variable AMG performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system launching the EV from 0-62 mph in just around 3.4 seconds with the help of its Race Start mode and Boost function. Its speed tops at 155 mph with the pack.
The full-electric sedan has a lithium-ion battery with 107.8 kWh usable energy based on WLTP data. There are no specifics on the EV’s electric range yet but it should be noted that the base EQS can go up to 478 miles on a single charge based on the more flexible WLTP cycle. The German luxury automaker claims a quick charging station can juice up the high-performance Merc for up to 186 miles in merely 15 minutes, and it can recuperate 300 kW in its regenerative braking system “under optimal environmental conditions”.
Design
Emphasizing its AMG identity is the EV’s new Panamericana front grille styling on top of a black panel. It also carries 21 to 22 inches wheels with optional high-performance ceramic composite brakes that can be had with red brake calipers both in front and in the rear. Meanwhile, the interior is fitted with an AMG-specific flat-bottom Performance steering wheel, sports pedals, and floor mats. Special badges and carbon-fiber trims adorn the cabin of the auto too.
Tech
A new feature introduced in the AMG EQS is that its battery management system can now be updated over-the-air. The flagship EV has five drive modes namely Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. It comes with three options for its AMG Sound Experience such as Balanced, Sport, and Powerful for better acoustics inside and out. Everything else is basically lifted from its standard Benz form, notably the MBUX Hyperscreen, but with the addition of some AMG-badged displays and an optional rear-seat package with heated massaging operation.
