Nico Rosberg is expecting that Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team will ink a new deal with him when his contract ends this season. According to a report, the negotiations might start mid-2016.
Rosberg stated that he is looking to spend more time with the Mercedes F1 group as he is happy in his current position. It should be noted that he has been with the team for seven seasons already. The German joined just the year after Mercedes took over Brawn GP. He even had the opportunity to team up with one of the greatest drivers in the sport, Michael Schumacher.
Since the start of Rosberg’s tenure with the team, he has been nothing short of impressive. In his debut year with Mercedes, there were many instances wherein he outraced his veteran teammate in both the qualifying and actual races.
Following the introduction of the new engine rules in 2014 up to the last season, Rosberg has consistently asserted himself as second only to the reigning F1 Drivers’ Champion. He was also instrumental in the Constructors’ Championships of Mercedes F1 during the mentioned years. However, his relationship with his teammate Lewis Hamilton has been very rocky.
Toto Wolff said that contract talks with Rosberg hadn’t taken place yet. He added that they will still see how the season will pan out before beginning negotiations with the driver.
Rosberg pointed out that the contract is not something present in his mind for now. He expressed his confidence though about staying with the team longer, and he said he is enjoying his time with the group.
With the track record of Rosberg and his contributions to the team, particularly his impressive start this season, he is truly a major asset to the team. Therefore, it might not be long until he gets a new contract with them.
