Niki Lauda, the non-executive chairman of Mercedes AMG Petronas, confirmed through an interview with Sky Sports that the team has opened talks for a multi-year extension with Lewis Hamilton’s contract. The Formula One legend revealed the deal would guarantee the Briton’s spot in the team for two or three more years after 2015. Then, the Austrian said he is positive the agreement will come to a fruition.

When asked whether Mercedes has also opened its door to Fernando Alonso, Lauda was quick to deny the issue. He categorically ruled out the possibilities of the Spaniard joining the team.

The speculations about Alonso going to Mercedes began when the originally planned swap of Sebastian Vettel and the Ferrari driver did not proceed. While the current F1 world champion was already assured of a position in Ferrari, Red Bull opted for another driver as a replacement for the four-time champ. It was recently revealed that Daniil Kvyat would be partnering with Daniel Ricciardo in Red Bull next season.

Lauda stated that there have never been any thoughts of acquiring Alonso. He pointed out that they already have Nico Rosberg and Hamilton. Currently, the two have been giving Mercedes impressive wins. Thus, the non-executive chair of the team explained they were not looking for changes in the present lineup.

The Austrian noted Hamilton remains under contract with the team until next season. On the other hand, Rosberg still has two more years in his existing contract. Therefore, Alonso has no place in the team right now.
