The Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen is probably the most resilient product of the three-pointed star marque. It has been a popular choice among celebrities and wealthy businessmen who wanted something that would flaunt their aura of influence.
One thing noticeable about the G-Wagen is its design has been almost the same since it came out in 1979. It may had several very minor tweaks over the past few decades, but they were nothing significant and its box-type frame is still what makes it very identifiable on the road.
With the the introduction of passive safety legislations, plus stricter emission standards being imposed by several countries and organizations, Daimler is considering to make some adjustments to its legendary automobile range to extend its production line until 2027, according to Car Magazine UK. However, the source noted that the Mercedes G-Wagen will retain its very popular slab-sided flanks.
The military version of the G-Wagen, the 461-series, will remain almost unchanged, but its 463-series aimed at private customers is bound to receive several significant updates, stated the report. This is to comply with the current legal standards and the needs of the present generation of customers.
Among the expected changes will be on the body and the roof. The source claimed its frame will be widened by around 100 mm, that is from 1760 to 1860 mm. Then, the roof will be pulled down a bit to cater to owners with standard-sized garages.
In addition, the next generation of the G-Wagen will come with new Distronic Plus radar hidden within its three-pointed star logo, LED headlamps, air intakes, cameras for the driver assistance systems, as well as a couple of technological updates for added safety, functionality and comfort.
The post also revealed the possible engine specifications of the upcoming G-Wagen:
- 3.0-liter petrol straight six with 367 bhp and 354 lb-ft of torque
- 2.9-liter diesel straight six giving off as much as 313 bhp and 354 lb-ft of torque
- 4.0-liter biturbo petrol V8 with an output of 462 bhp and 442 lb-ft of torque
- For the G63 AMG, it would carry a 5.5-liter V8 with 571 bhp and 590 lb-ft of torque
