As earlier speculated, the new Mercedes-Benz pickup truck is named the “X-Class.” So it’s not the “GLT” as many sources have called it. The Mercedes-Benz X-Class was just revealed at the Artipelag art museum in Stockholm, Sweden on Tuesday, October 25, 2016.
Here are the things we learned from the launching of the X-Class:
1. Styling
The Mercedes X-Class Concept may share the same platform with the Nissan Navara, but the new pickup truck of Merc distanced itself from its counterpart in Nissan in terms of styling. The X-Class incorporates the combination of sporty and luxurious design language of its maker. The Mercedes pickup truck carries over many elements of the three-pointed star brand’s C-Class range, SUV and van models. In comparison of the two, the new Mercedes pickup appears sleeker than the present product of Nissan.
Mercedes unveiled two concept models for the X-Class. The first carries a pearly white finish, which had been referred to as the “stylish explorer.” The white version embodies a luxurious take on the pickup combined with the usual functionality and capacity of a utility truck. The vehicle possesses a single-louvre grille with the Mercedes logo in front similar to the design of the brand’s coupes. Moreover, under its extended wheel arches are 22-inch alloy wheels with anthracite chrome finish.
A more powerful version of the X-Class comes in the form of the “powerful adventurer” with yellow-green finish. The vehicle is more towering than the “stylish explorer” thanks to its 1.90-meter ride height and 35×11.50-sized tyres. The unit is adorned by double-louvre grille, plus wider and carbon-reinforced wheel arches. Its rugged features are further accentuated by an electric winch in front and a metal hook.
The interior of the pickup is decorated by carbon-black leather and metallic brushed surfaces. Basically, the inside of the pickup it bears a striking resemblance with the SUVs of Mercedes.
2. Power
Daimler revealed that the range-topping model of the X-Class will have a V6 engine. The power unit is mated to a 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system. Mercedes claims that the pickup truck is capable of carrying a payload of more than 1.1 ton and it has a towing capacity of 3.5 tons.
No figures were disclosed yet regarding the engine output of the X-Class. Aside from the standard model, the X-Class is expected to have an AMG trim. A Mercedes-Maybach version of it is unlikely.
3. Safety
To ensure the safety of its occupants, the X-Class is equipped with the existing driving assistance package of Mercedes, including cameras, radar and ultrasound sensors. Just look forward to the modern amenities present in the SUV, vans and C-Class units of Mercedes.
4. Comfort
The X-Class offers seats wrapped in high-quality leather for the convenience of its occupants. It can accommodate up to five people in its seats. In a nutshell, the recipe for the interior elements of the new Mercedes pickup truck mixes the existing materials found inside the C-Class, V-Class and the SUV models of its manufacturer.
5. Technology
The X-Class features a high level of connectivity thanks to its communication module with on-board SIM card. Monitoring of the status of the auto through a smartphone, tablet or PC is also made possible thanks to its host of integrated apps allowing one to check its fuel level, see its parking location, get and send directions to destination, seek help during emergencies, and more.
Arrival
The production model of the Mercedes X-Class is scheduled to arrive in 2017. The unit will be sold under Mercedes-Benz Vans division.
