Mercedes-Benz is steering toward a more balanced approach with the design and performance of its upcoming 2026 CLA. The German luxury automaker reportedly plans to launch the new iteration of its signature subcompact sedan in the US by late 2025.

Highlighting the car will be a choice of electric and internal-combustion (ICE) powertrains to satisfy diverse customer demands or preferences during the automotive world’s transitional era from fossil fuel-dominated road cars to electric vehicles (EVs).

New Mercedes CLA to Benefit From the New MMA Platform

As previewed in its concept form, the new CLA will be built on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) architecture. The versatile platform is engineered to support both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and traditional ICE models.

The dual-purpose design of the framework enables the seamless integration of a thin battery pack beneath the passenger floor for the electric variant while accommodating a front-mounted internal combustion engine for the conventional versions. This adaptability extends to the next-gen CLA’s drivetrain configurations.

The BEV version features a rear motor for standard rear-wheel drive, with an optional front motor for all-wheel drive. Meanwhile, ICE models employ a transverse-mounted engine with a potential for rear-wheel drive.

The innovative MMA architecture allows Mercedes to offer various driving experiences without compromising efficiency or performance. With that, here’s a quick look at the ICE and EV variants of the CLA:

Internal Combustion Engine Evolution

Mercedes is introducing a cutting-edge 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine for the CLA’s ICE variant. Unlike conventional downsizing strategies, Mercedes meticulously redesigned this engine to ensure superb refinement and efficiency. It also aimed to address challenges in delivering driver and passenger comfort like noise and vibration. The result is a compact, lightweight powerplant delivering 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 48-volt hybrid system for enhanced performance.

A revamped 8F-eDCT dual-clutch transmission integrates a 27-hp electric motor that supports regenerative braking and electric-only operation for short distances. This efficient hybrid setup achieves significant weight reduction and improved fuel economy, reinforcing Mercedes’ commitment to sustainability.

Electrifying Performance

The CLA EV showcases Mercedes’ push into advanced electric mobility. The base model delivers 268 hp through a rear-mounted motor, while the optional 4MATIC configuration adds a 107-hp front motor. Unique to this model is a two-speed gearbox in the rear motor, optimizing efficiency across various speeds.

The EV version’s 800-volt battery system is a first for Mercedes. This primes the CLA EV for fast charging. A 320-kW DC fast charger can replenish enough power for 186 miles in just 10 minutes. The top-tier battery offers a projected EPA range of approximately 370 miles, setting a high bar for electric sedans in its class.

Mercedes CLA Sets a New Benchmark in Electric Range

Mercedes showcased the CLA EV’s capabilities by breaking the 24-hour EV distance record at Italy’s Nardò test track. Traveling 2,309 miles at a consistent 130 mph and utilizing rapid 10-minute charging stops, the CLA outperformed the Porsche Taycan’s previous record by 181 miles.
