AMG CEO Refutes V8 Engine Revival For C63 and E63 Models
Giancarlo Perlas August 23, 2023Sad news for petrolheads, Mercedes-AMG boss Michael Schiebe just denied rumors of the AMG C63 and E63 models getting back to V8 engines. The anticipation around the potential return of the eight-cylinder powerhouse has been quashed during a recent interview with the AMG CEO.
A Departure from Rumors
Dispelling the speculations that arose this month, the AMG CEO unequivocally denied the possibility of an eight-cylinder revival for the C63 and E63 models in an interview with The Drive. The earlier buzz had hinted at the reintroduction of the V8 engine in these AMG models within the current decade.
The reality, however, seems to be steering in a different direction.
Embracing Hybrid Innovation
The prevailing vision for these high-performance vehicles involves the continuation of the four-cylinder hybrid system, which presently propels the latest iteration of the AMG C63. This hybrid system has notably supplanted the roaring 4.0-liter V8 from the previous version.
It is evident in Schiebe’s statements that the company is embracing the era of hybridization to enhance both performance and sustainability.
Next-Generation Expectations
As for the upcoming generation of the E63, though not officially unveiled, it is widely anticipated to incorporate a hybrid setup centered around a straight-six engine. This strategic move aligns with the industry trend toward performance-oriented hybrids. Schiebe acknowledged the shifting landscape, noting the emergence of various performance hybrids from other manufacturers.
The shift towards hybridization doesn’t necessarily mandate a downsizing of engines. Instead, it underscores the potential of combining electrification with powerful engines.
Final Thoughts
Initial reports had attributed the possibility of V8 engines returning to the C63 and E63 models to unnamed sources within AMG. These sources had indicated modifications to the existing twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, in adherence to forthcoming Euro 7 emissions standards.
The recent statement of the AMG CEO has already ruled out these rumored changes though.
