Mercedes-Benz To Utilize Tesla’s Charging Network In North America

Giancarlo Perlas July 8, 2023

Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to grant its customers access to Tesla’s extensive charging network to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging options. This decision by the three-pointed star marque follows similar moves made by Ford, General Motors, Rivian, Volvo, and Polestar as of late.

Expanded Charging Options Start in 2024

Mercedes EV owners can expect to gain access to the Tesla expansive charging network starting in 2024 based on the German luxury vehicle maker’s roadmap. To facilitate compatibility, an adapter will be made available for existing Mercedes EVs equipped with the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) connector, enabling them to interface seamlessly with the US-based automaker’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector.

Further down the road, new Mercedes EV models in the North American region are planned to be equipped with a built-in Tesla connector by 2025. This potentially signals a transition away from the CCS connector. However, it’s inconclusive as of yet whether or not the company is looking to phase out CCS completely in favor of the Tesla connector in the near future.

Mercedes’ Own Charging Network

Acknowledging the significance of electric mobility, Mercedes has also affirmed its commitment to developing its own charging network. Unveiled at the 2023 CES, the Mercedes charging network aims to establish 400 “charging hubs” across North America, boasting over 2,500 individual chargers by the end of the decade.

While smaller in scale than Tesla’s existing network, which currently comprises over 12,000 chargers in North America, Mercedes intends to prioritize fast, convenient, and reliable charging solutions to enhance the overall EV ownership experience.

Mercedes CEO’s Official Statement

In line with this, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius expressed the brand’s dedication to accelerating its transition to electric vehicles. Likewise, he emphasized their goal of providing exceptional charging solutions for customers, ensuring convenient access wherever their journeys may take them.
