Mercedes-AMG S63e Hybrid Caught in Spy Video

Giancarlo Perlas January 19, 2021

Over the years, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has delved into the hybrid territory, but up to now, we are yet to see a hybrid version of the car in the AMG line. Things are about to change though as a new video further confirms that the three-pointed star marque is working on the Mercedes-AMG S63e Plug-in Hybrid.

The suspected AMG S63e remains in heavy camouflage like when we first witnessed it last year. Despite its full wrap, there are things that support our suspicions about it.

It’s definitely an AMG S-Class

First, the proportions, stance, and form of the car all follow that of Mercedes’ flagship luxury car. Then the exposed lights, windows, and greenhouse size all scream of S-Class. Meanwhile, the muscled-out look brought about the bulges within the camo, huge grille, and quadruple exhausts confirm the vehicle’s AMG blood.

Details about the AMG S63e are scarce at the moment but we think that the combined output of its V8 engine and electric motor will be near the 700 hp mark. There are rumors too that the auto will be followed up with an AMG S73e.

What took AMG so long for a hybrid high-performance S-Class?

Most industry experts agree that Mercedes is very careful when it comes to introducing changes to the S-Class because it is the company’s flagship car, which is what defines it as a brand. Another reason why it took so long for AMG to integrate a full-hybrid setup with it is because it had to make sure that the technology is ready for the S-Class.

So far, Mercedes has shown so much success in its hybridization efforts. That’s also thanks to the company’s little by little technology transfer from its Formula One race cars to its road cars.
