Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Unleashed to the World with 720 HP Output

Giancarlo Perlas July 15, 2020

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is a track-focused, street-legal car that treads a fine line on what cars should be allowed on public roads. The vehicle takes a lot of inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car in its aerodynamics and design. Its maker also confirmed that its power unit cranks a total of 720 hp.

It’s Called the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Not Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series

The car is the sixth Mercedes model to bear the Black Series name. Prior to it, there were five limited Black Series models from AMG Performance Center. Contrary to earlier reports, that the car will not be named the Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series because it is not an offshoot of the range like the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro. The new AMG GT Black Series is a completely different model according to Mercedes.

“The GT R Pro was based on the GT R, but you’ll notice there’s no ‘R’ in GT Black Series, it’s a completely different model, it represents what’s technically possible, the pinnacle of a car made for the racetrack, that can also be driven on public roads,” said Joerg Letzel, product manager of AMG.

Power

The AMG GT Black Series is equipped with a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine. It produces 720 hp at 6,700-6,900 rpm and 590 lb-ft of torque at 2,000-6,000 rpm. All that power goes to the rear wheels and distributed via AMG’s 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The setup lets the vehicle accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, and its top speed is electronically-limited to 202 mph.

The engine uses a flat-plane crankshaft instead of the cross-plane configuration. The camshafts and exhaust manifolds utilize an optimized firing order, and the twin-turbochargers sit on anti-friction bearings to enhance their throttle response. Meanwhile, air circulation is improved through larger intercoolers.

The immense power of the new Black Series is managed through the AMG Traction Control system that provides nine slip differentials, a ceramic brake system with special brake pads, and black calipers.

Exterior

The AMG GT Black Series sheds a lot of its weight through the heavy use of carbon-fiber materials and lightweight aluminum construction. Even the glass of the car is made from light materials.

Distinguishing the model from the other AMG GT cars is its two-tone color in special magmabeam paint with contrasting black highlights, larger Panamericana front grille with vertical slats, adjustable front splitter, huge air intakes, front fins, flat central hood scoop, extended wheel arches with air inlets, side skirts, rear diffuser, two twin-tailpipe system, large electronically-controlled rear wing, and 10 J x 19 front wheels wrapped in 285/35 ZR 19 tires and 12 J x 20 rear wheels in 335/30 ZR 30 tires.

Interior

The upholstery of the AMG GT Black Series is offered with Nappa leather and dynamic microfiber with n black with contrasting orange stitching. It is equipped with the AMG Performance steering wheel, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster in front of the driver, and a 10.25-inch multimedia display on the central console too.

Fitting the optional AMG Track Package adds the AMG carbon-fiber bucket seats (not offered in US, China, and Canada), roll-over protection, 4-point seatbelts, and 2 kg fire extinguisher.
