“Luxury at its finest. Coming soon.” This is what Mercedes-Benz tweeted recently. Also in the Twitter post was a video teaser showing what is believed to be a Mercedes-Maybach SUV. The #AutoChina hashtag tells us that the vehicle is bound for the 2018 Beijing Auto Show happening later this month.
According to Auto Express, Mercedes-Maybach already confirmed that they will be revealing a new model in Beijing. So far, other details have been closely guarded by Mercedes, but the all-new vehicle could be a bespoke SUV.
The teaser reveals very little information about the upcoming auto other than its extra-opulent interior, which is what’s expected from a Maybach-badged vehicle. However, the layout of the seats as well as their height hint that it is something bigger than a car.
Another factor that leads us to believe that what we are looking at might be a Mercedes-Maybach SUV is the fact that China has now been regarded by automakers as a key market for luxury SUVs. Therefore, it just makes sense if Mercedes will take advantage of the high demand for luxury SUVs in the giant Asian country.
In an earlier interview of the same source with Gorden Wagener, Mercedes’ chief designer, he hinted that there are plans for Maybach to have its own signature standalone models similar to AMG. That means the unit will have no corresponding Mercedes-Benz or Mercedes-AMG versions. A luxury SUV exclusive to the Maybach badge would be an ideal way to implement it.
Wagener pointed out during the interview that while other super-luxury automotive brands take on a more traditional approach with their vehicles, Mercedes focuses itself in modern-luxury. He explained that the difference between the two is modern luxury is a bit more tasteful.
It possible too that the Mercedes-Maybach SUV will have some hybrid elements found in the upcoming EQ models.
