Lewis Hamilton Wins F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2018
Giancarlo Perlas April 29, 2018Lewis Hamilton bags the win at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2018. The victory takes him to the lead in the drivers’ rankings.
After Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel got the pole position in the qualifying last Saturday, it looked like he was poised to emerge triumphant again. However, the chaos that unfolded during the race allowed Hamilton to take the lead all the way to the finish line.
All hell broke loose from start to finish that eventually saw the two Red Bull cars whack each other at Lap 40, which reportedly made their boss Christian Horner furious. Even the safety car was not spared as Haas F1’s Romain Grosjean crashed under it at Lap 42.
Mercedes F1’s Valtteri Bottas got the jump on Vettel on Lap 47, and it definitely appeared that he was about to grab the win in this race. However, bad luck struck when he looked to have ran across the debris left on the race track during the next lap. That incident led him to retire at Lap 49 due to tire puncture.
After the pandemonium, Hamilton gained the necessary points to overtake Vettel in the 2018 Driver Standings. The Briton now has 70 points in the scorecard, which is now ahead of his rival by 4 points.
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen took the second place while Force India’s Sergio Perez took home the third place. Raikkonen is currently third in the Driver Standings with 48 points. He is ahead of Bottas there by 8 points.
Hamilton said in his interview that the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was an emotional race. He praised his teammate for his exceptional job, and he stated that Bottas really deserved to win.
“It feels a little bit odd to be up here but I have to take it,” Hamilton added.
