Is There a Mercedes-AMG SUV Black Series in the Works?
Giancarlo Perlas April 6, 2018Who’s excited about a Mercedes-AMG SUV Black Series? Well, it appears Mercedes is not one of them because AMG CEO Tobias Moers just laughed at the idea.
“No, no, no, no… Never,” was the resounding response of Moers to Auto Guide when he was asked about it during the 2018 New York Auto Show. He emphasized that the Black Series treatment is only given to cars that are worthy of the racetrack.
It should be noted that the AMG brand has expanded drastically in the past few years. They now offer the 43 series models in addition to their 45, 63, 63 S and 65 series vehicles. The present SUVs of Mercedes are offered in 63, 63 S and 65 trims. With Jaguar Land Rover planning to release a rollcage-fitted performance SUV capable of taking on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, some think that AMG might follow suit. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case, according to Moers.
The AMG CEO also discussed about the possibility of Mercedes releasing a follow-up to the C63 AMG Black Series. He said that with the presence of the Mercedes-AMG GT, it would no longer make sense to sell another Black Series under the C-Class Coupe.
Moers explained that a Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe Black Series would probably have a price similar to the Mercedes-AMG GT. Then, the regular Mercedes-AMG GT would likely be lighter and have better handing than a Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series.
Moers pointed out that the Black Series will only be exclusive to two-door cars. With that, the source tried to confirm if there is a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series coming up. The AMG boss simply replied, “Let’s wait and see.”
