4 New Engines Revealed by Mercedes-Benz
Giancarlo Perlas October 31, 2016Mercedes-Benz just unveiled four new engines. The company also revealed one of the classes that will receive the new engines.
According to the Global Media Site of Daimler, the new Mercedes engines include a gasoline and diesel-powered 3.0-liter inline-six, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and a 4.0-liter biturbo V8.
The facelifted 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class was revealed to get the petrol-fueled 3.0-liter inline-six and the 4.0-liter biturbo V8. The latter will most probably be installed in the AMG version of the car.
The Inline-Six Engine Petrol and Diesel
The goal of Mercedes in introducing the inline-six engine, which was last seen in the late 90s, is to arrive at a unit with more power than the V6 and with better fuel-efficiency ratings. The unit is called the “M256.”
Compared to the M276 V6 engine capable of producing 333 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, the M256 has an output of 408 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.
The M256 has been fitted with Integrated Starter-Alternator (ISG), electric auxiliary compressor, and the intelligent turbocharging features of the unit. In addition, the components help the car in saving fuel and in decreasing turbo lag significantly.
The new turbocharger of the M256 operates up to 70,000 rpm in merely a third of a second. On the other hand, the ISG is a part of a 48V electrical system. The new engine is smaller in length compared to its present counterpart because its ISG already handles the car’s water pump and air conditioning compressing. Thus, it renders drive belts irrelevant.
The diesel version of the inline-six engine will have steel pistons, aluminum block, stepped-bowl combustion system, and Nanoslide coating on the cylindrical walls. The parts lets the unit produce 313 hp and 479 lb-ft of toque. Autoblog said the diesel engine might not make it in the US market.
The Four-Cylinder Engine
The engine is dubbed as the “M264.” Among the features of the unit are the twin-scroll turbochargers and belt-driven 48Vstarter alternator (BSA). The BSA assists the car in the recovery of up to 12.5 kW and in filling the gap in turbo under 2,500 rpm. The company hadn’t stated yet the other specs of the engine but it is expected to deliver around 134 hp per liter.
The Biturbo V8 Engine
The new V8 engine is called the M176. Mercedes pointed out that it will be the most fuel-efficient compared to the other V8s in the market. The product uses Camtronic valve timing to shut down four cylinders when needed to improve fuel savings. The unit follows the same layout present in the current V8 power units of Mercedes.
The new standard version of the V8 can dish out at least 476 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The numbers are 21 hp more than the M278 model.
